BARISAN Nasional’s Mohamad Hasan is the winner of today’s Rantau by-election with 10,397 votes, said the Election Commission.
The Umno acting president secured a 4,510-vote majority over Pakatan Harapan’s Dr S. Streram, who received 5,887 votes.
Independent candidates R. Malarvizhi and Mohd Nor Yassin polled 83 and 79 votes, respectively. Both are set to lose their deposits.
The EC announced a 79.3% voter turnout, surpassing its initial target of 70%.
Only Mohamad and Malarvizhi were onstage with the returning officer when the announcement was made. Dr Streram and Nor were a no-show.
Mohamad retains the state seat that he won unopposed in the general election last May, when Dr Streram was blocked from filing his nomination.
Election court judge Azimah Omar had allowed Dr Streram’s petition for a by-election, declaring Mohamad’s 14th general election victory null and void.
Rantau is the seventh by-election after GE14, and the third this year after the Cameron Highlands and Semenyih contests.
BN’s win tonight makes it the third in a row for the former ruling pact.
Mohamad has been Rantau rep since 2004. – April 13, 2019.
