THE sultan of Johor wants all politicking to stop over who will replace Osman Sapian as the menteri besar, saying he will decide in good time.

Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar said he might be overseas, but he was keeping an eye on developments at home, especially in Johor.

“I want certain quarters to stop making noise and fighting over politics and instead focus on running the country.

“As for Johor, don’t interfere in the affairs of the state as it is a sovereign state and still has a Sultan,” he said on Facebook today.

“I will make the best decision for the rakyat when the time is right,” he said

His statement comes following Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement today that it is the ruling party and not the sultan who has the power to appoint the menteri besar.

“This is a political matter. The sultan does not play a role. It is left to the party to choose who they need,” he said.

Dr Mahathir’s comments appeared to be in response to a tweet by Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim yesterday claiming that Osman Sapian was replaced on the orders of his father, Sultan Ibrahim, who has absolute prerogative to appoint the Johor menteri besar.

Dr Mahathir clarified, however, that Pakatan Harapan would decide on who would replace Osman, who tendered his resignation yesterday.

The 93-year-old leader said the government does not much time for delays and will name Osman’s replacement soon. – April 10, 2019.

  • The administration of the state is a political matter and the majority elects the MB who is a political appointee. The politicians decide and the constitutional monarch consents as required by the constitution. Let's uphold the constitution.

  • I think the Royal Family has forgotten that they do not pick but consent to what has been selected on advise by PM. There is a strong line demarcation on this. The royal family will be involving directly into politics if they insist on picking who they want to be the CM. Then the role of apoloitical do not apply anymore and the Royalty will be subjected to rules of law like any layman.
