FOREIGN Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas should be sacked over the “mishandling” of recent issues, such as the Rome Statute and an anti-discrimination treaty, said a group of civil society groups linked to Barisan Nasional.
The group, led by former Umno Federal Territories Youth chief Mohd Razlan Rafii, staged a protest outside the Parliament gates this morning. They marched to the building to present a memorandum.
“NGOs and Malaysians have lost faith in Saifuddin and Thomas as they cannot defend the importance of the constitution.
“The two incidents are against Malaysians and the constitution,” said Jazlan, who led a group of about 20.
He was referring to the Putrajaya’s intention to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court.
Following backlash, Malaysia decided not to proceed with ratifying ICERD, while it has withdrawn its accession to the Rome Statute.
The Malay groups’ memorandum today said the ratification of ICERD would have led Malaysians to a “social life without limitations”.
On the Rome Statute, it said “polemics” would not have occurred had the government not rushed into it.
When Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced Malaysia’s withdrawal from the statute last Friday, he blamed “political confusion” caused by those with “vested interests”, highlighting an unnamed member of the royalty. – April 8, 2019.
