PUTRAJAYA is still hearing the views of different parties on the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
The government has yet to make any decision on the IPCMC as it is looking into objections to the proposed commission, which has been accused as being narrowly focused on police misconduct.
Putrajaya under Pakatan Harapan has voiced support for the IPCMC years after it was first recommended in the findings of a royal commission of inquiry into deaths under police custody.
It would replace the “watered down” Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), which critics said had little teeth to act against errant police officers.
Muhyiddin said there are concerns that the IPCMC will only focus on the police.
“Based on the information I received, there is a need for us to continue engagement before the matter is finalised,” he said, adding that more discussions were important so that the IPCMC could be accepted by all parties.
The government last year said it would set up the IPCMC to replace the EAIC, which was established by the previous Barisan Nasional administration as a compromise.
The IPCMC will be an independent body to scrutinise complaints against law enforcement authorities.
Putrajaya’s move to support it was welcomed by human rights groups. – March 25, 2019.
