THE Attorney-General’s Chambers has upped the ante in its fight to serve a warrant of arrest on former Asian International Arbitration Centre director Sundra Rajoo.

Hours after Sundra refused to show up in court this morning, the AGC filed an appeal to review the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court’s decision to not issue an arrest warrant for him.

Sundra was to have been slapped with three criminal charges this morning. He is claiming immunity from arrest and prosecution.

His no-show in court today was roundly hammered on social media by Malaysians who wondered at his insistence on immunity from the law when he had declared himself to be innocent of all  allegations against him.

The AGC is awaiting word on whether the High Court would hear its appeal today for a review of Justice Azura Alwi’s decision this morning, said deputy public prosecutor Kamal Baharin Omar.

Earlier today, Azura agreed not to issue the warrant and said that the court would await the high court’s ruling tomorrow on whether Sundra is immune to arrest and prosecution.

Sundra resigned as AIAC director following damning allegations against him in an anonymous letter that was sent to ministers, the inspector-general of police and the attorney-general, among others.

The letter alleged that he had used the centre’s funds to ensure the ministers extended his contract.

Tomorrow, the Kuala Lumpur High Court will hear Sundra’s judicial review application naming the foreign minister, the attorney-general, the MACC and the government as respondents after which the same court is expected to make its ruling on Sundra’s immunity.

Sundra claims he had diplomatic immunity as the AIAC director, which was similar to the role of an ambassador or a high commissioner, according to the laws and regulations governing his appointment. – March 25, 2019.
