PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is willing to consider replacing Ronald Kiandee as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman following complaints from Pakatan Harapan lawmakers.
He said he will think about replacing the Beluran MP with another opposition lawmaker.
“But at this moment he remains as the chairman of PAC,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference today after launching the Love MY Palm Oil campaign at Pulau Carey in Selangor this morning.
His comments came after Pakatan Haparan lawmaker Wong Chen disclosed yesterday that PAC PH members had written a letter to Dr Mahathir over Kiandee being retained in the post which he was appointed to as an opposition legislator.
Over the weekend, Nurul Izzah Anwar disclosed that she had quit the PAC over Kiandee remaining as the its chairman.
PH had in the run up to the last polls pledged in its manifesto that the head of the PAC would be from the opposition as part of its plan to make the government accountable and transparent.
However, Kiandee’s position came under the spotlight after he left Umno and last month joined Bersatu, a PH pact member.
“This is not a legal matter – it is a promise made by the party. We, Pakatan Harapan, can do it any time,” Dr Mahathir said today when asked as to when the change could be done. – March 24, 2019.
