A PEACE and solidarity rally for victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings will proceed tomorrow after police received notice from organisers about the event.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the rally can proceed at Dataran Merdeka from 7am to 11am.
“We received a notice and they have complied with the Peaceful Assembly Act. Therefore, we give the organiser permission to rally tomorrow,” Fuzi told reporters at an event at the Police Academy in Setapak.
The notice for the rally was sent to the police a few days ago, a source from the Dang Wangi district police station told The Malaysian Insight separately.
“We received the notice and we will accommodate the rally,” the source said.
The rally was called for by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who said it was to show the world that Malaysia rejects ideologies of hate and stands in solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, last week.
According to Mujahid, the rally was decided at a special meeting for peace and harmony among various religious and ethnic communities in Kuala Lumpur.
Last Friday, two mosques in Christchurch were attacked by a gunman, killing 50 people.
A 17-year-old Malaysian, Mohd Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, is among those who were killed.
Dozens more were injured, including three Malaysians. One of them is Haziq’s father, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib. – March 22, 2019.
