MOHD Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, who went missing after the Christchurch mosque shootings on Friday, has been confirmed dead.

Penang welfare exco Phee Boon Poh said the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington has been informed about the 17-year-old’s death.

Phee, who just returned from Christchurch tonight, said he is unable to share details, such as when and where Haziq’s body was found.

“The New Zealand government is very strict about its privacy act. There were so many deaths, and careful identification (of bodies) by the families is needed.

“DNA confirmation is needed before any announcement (can be made). I was with the mother last night,” he said via WhatsApp.

The terror assault on Al-Noor and Linwood Mosques left 50 people dead and scores injured.

Three Malaysians are among those hurt. They are Rahimi Ahmad, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib and Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar.

Haziq was Tarmizi’s son.

The Penang government, after finding out at Rahimi is from Bayan Lepas, flew his mother and brother to Christchurch, accompanied by Phee and assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz.

Haziq was with his father and younger brother at Al-Noor Mosque when it came under attack.

Tarmizi, a 46-year-old flight simulator operator, has undergone operations to remove bullet fragments. He is recovering in hospital, as are Rahimi and Nazril.

Wisma Putra earlier called on the public not to speculate on the teen.

Yesterday, it said New Zealand has a clear process on the release of victims’ names.

”Once the families are notified, police will convey the information to the New Zealand Foreign Ministry, which will then convey the information to the relevant high commissions or embassies.

“The information will be released publicly by New Zealand police through their media system.”

It was reported that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa will head to Christchurch tomorrow, representing the Malaysian government.

The minister in charge of Islamic affairs is expected to conduct funeral prayers. – March 20, 2019.

  • When la. When are we going to get off this miserable ferris wheel. Im afraid. Today, people like Tok Mat, once a voice of reason, is fanning embers of mistrust and hate for political reasons. Granted, any political party may have the right to propagate their brand or vision of their Malaysia. But no la. This is where I believe Tun M is right is right in practising censorship and dictatorship. Who are we? What is being Malaysian. Power, greed and fear will erode all that weve built for the last 60 years. Islam did not make Malaysia. Islamic tolerance and love for all, practiced by educated, loving, and visionary Muslims made Malaysia. All of nothing is nothing.
