Religious leaders not concerned about graft, says Mat Sabu

THERE are religious leaders who simply do not care about fighting corruption and wrongdoing as taught by Islam, said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, adding that these leaders were holding on to “damnable” ideologies.

The leader, better known as Mat Sabu, said DAP is now at the forefront of fighting corruption when it should be Muslims leading the charge.

“I don’t understand why some religious leaders are defending Umno/BN. It is wrong to subscribe to this damnable thinking (fahaman celaka). Instead, followers of Islam cannot compromise on corruption.

“How come DAP is the champion in fighting corruption. It should be the Muslims because we have been taught that those who give and receive kickbacks will go to hell.

“Muslims are supposed to be the champions (against corruption) but we keep looking for words to enable it… this is not corruption, these are gifts,” he said during his opening speech at Amanah Selangor’s convention today.

Mat Sabu also used Australian model Miranda Kerr as an example, whom he said was not Muslim but had the integrity to fight graft unlike “some Muslim woman”.

Kerr recently returned jewellery worth some US$9 million, allegedly bought with funds stolen from 1MDB, to the Department of Justice.

“When she got the jewellery from her boyfriend Jho Low, I am sure she was happy. But when she found out that the money was stolen from Malaysians, she returned the gifts,” said Mat Sabu.

He also said that the party was committed to teach the people that corruption is absolutely prohibited.

“We should emulate the values of the first Caliph, Abu Bakar Al Siddiq must be our guidance,” he said.

Mat Sabu said when Abu Bakar was appointed as the first Caliph, he said: “support me if I am right, but tell me if I am wrong.”

“This is the attitude we want to be inculcated within the people. If we take power and do wrong, the people will rise up and depose us,” he said. – September 10, 2017.

  • THIS man must go into Malaysia history books. He is not an intellectual even crude BUT his thinking surpass legions of scholars, his spirit both intelligent and warrior. Ordinary malays need not be smarter than others, so long as they have character like Mat Sabu, they will succeed.

  • "Muslims are supposed to be the champions (against corruption) but we keep looking for words to enable it... this is not corruption, these are gifts," ........ then Mohamad Sabu should demand PH includes the ...... PROMISE that the cabinet and state excos publicly declare their assets and tax returns (the promise was NOT included. Why?) ...... and all "gifts and donations" belong to the country and NOT the individuals concerned (similar to other countries) ........ the rakyat is very concerned the promise is NOT included ..... eventually PH will become corrupted too ....

  • Fact of the matter is there is nothing in the Quran or Hadith with terms like "conflict of interest", "fiduciary responsibility", "related party transactions" or "independent audit". Hell there is not even the word "accounting" which is basically Protestant..

  • Hadi Awang kata mereka tak kisah kerusi tapi orang Islam mesti sokong. Biarlah orang Islam sokong, pergi mesjid, sembahyang, doa PAS, tapi undi dan kerusi, berilah kepada Amanah untuk buat kerja...
