PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will personally look into the controversies surrounding the International Women’s Day march, including the police probe against the organisers, said Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

He said the decision was made in last cabinet meeting.

“After the last cabinet meeting Tun (Dr Mahathir) said he would look into this case,” he told reporters in Sepang International Circuit today.

Last week, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the police have started a probe into the activists behind the rally defending the rights of the LGBT community.

Muhyiddin said the organisers of Sunday’s International Women’s Day march did not have a permit for the protest.

During the rally, several groups had raised pro-LGBT slogans, resulting in criticism from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

Mujahid had said the government was firm in opposing LGBT groups.

Among others, the rally demanded an end to violence based on gender and sexual orientation, a ban on child marriages, giving women more rights to make choices over their own bodies and lives, and ensuring a dignified minimum wage of RM1,800 for all.

Activists have called on the government to stop the investigation targeting the organisers. – March 17, 2019.
