Cycling to the 7 wonders for children with cancer

Fellow Malaysians,

My name is David Wu.

Earlier today, my friend Ving Lee and I crossed into Thailand through the border checkpoint of Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah to begin our journey to the seven modern wonders of the world on bicycle (tagline #7wunders).

We had flagged off from Kuala Lumpur on August 31 in a simple but meaningful ceremony held at the premises of The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and officiated by the Women, Family and Community Development Rohani Abdul Karim. Our ride towards the Thai border afforded us a parting glimpse of Peninsular Malaysia before we begin our round the world journey.

This journey will see us attempt cycling to the Taj Mahal (India), Petra (Jordan), Colosseum (Italy), Christo Redentor (Brazil), Macchu Pichu (Peru), Chichen Itza (Mexico) and finally The Great Wall (China) before making our way home on land. A bonus visit to the great pyramids in Egypt is also on the cards. The journey will see us travel through 4 continents, across two oceans, past some 40 countries and estimated to take two years

Some of you may remember my previous challenges from the past couple of years; the walk from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu in 2015 and the cycle to China last year, both of which were aimed at raising funds to fix the homes of those affected by floods. The challenge this time will also incorporate a charitable cause, namely childhood cancer. What began as a personal endeavor would seem such wasted opportunity if it weren’t employed to persuade the public to give a little for a worthwhile cause. Let us do some good for our children.

#7wunders will therefore be partnering with NCSM for this effort and seek to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer under the “Ride for Gold” banner. Gold is the ribbon which represents childhood cancer as well as symbolizing the preciousness of children.

The aim of the ride is to raise RM5 million for the sole purpose of aiding underprivileged children that fight adult battles as well as to lend a hand to those who can’t help themselves. All monies raised will be channeled directly to NCSM and specifically for their children cancer facility only. RM5 million may seem a lofty target to set and it will not be easy to meet, therefore participation is key to the success of the objective which is where our theme of “A Ringgit A Malaysian” will serve as a pertinent reminder that small acts multiplied by millions can and WILL make a difference.

In the meantime, Ving Lee and I will do our utmost best to complete the task set out while taking you with us on a journey to the seven modern wonders of the world. Follow our journey to experience the moments of joy, anticipation, anguish, anxiety, highlights and meltdowns vicariously through our eyes, lenses and narratives over the next couple of years. In return, all we ask of you is a minimum contribution of RM1. It is cheaper than a movie ticket and lasts much longer than 2 hours. Nevertheless, do give more where possible.
