3rd Malaysian injured, youth missing in Christchurch shootings

THE Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a third Malaysian was injured in yesterday’s attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, while a youth is still missing.

Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah identified the three injured as Tarmizi Shuib, 46, from Kedah; Rahimi Ahmad, 39; and Mohd Nazril Hisham bin Omar, 46.

Tarmizi’s son, Muhd Haziq Tarmizi, 17, is still missing following the shootings, while a younger son, Muhd Haris, 12, is at a children’s hospital receiving treatment for trauma.

Saifuddin told reporters at an event in Indera Mahkota, Pahang, today, that the three who were shot are currently in stable condition.

He also said that Wisma Putra was not putting out a travel advisory for Malaysians to New Zealand as the situation is stable.

“Malaysians there however are advised to stay safe and vigilant,” said Saifuddin.

He added that the ministry will facilitate family members of the victims travelling to Christchurch.

As of yesterday, Wisma Putra had only confirmed two Malaysians injured in the shootings, but news reports quoting family members of the victims revealed that there was a third Malaysian affected.

The New Straits Times and Bernama had contacted Nazril’s wife, Zurinawati Mohi, an associate professor at a local university, who was told of her husband’s injuries by one of their children in a WhatsApp message yesterday.

She had earlier called Nazril and their three children, who live with him in Christchurch, but her calls went unanswered.

As of yesterday, Zurinawati said her 46-year-old husband was badly injured but had no other details.

Rahimi’s mother, Rokiah Mohammad, told reporters at her home in Bayan Lepas, Penang, yesterday, that her son had surgery to remove a bullet from his stomach, and would undergo another procedure today to remove one that is near the spine.

NST meanwhile said Tarmizi’s sister, Zairna Shuib, said the family were still in the dark about his son, Haziq, who had gone missing after the shooting at the mosque.

The attacks at Masjid Al-Noor on Dean’s Avenue and a smaller mosque in the Linwood suburb have killed 40 people.

A 28-year-old Australian national was charged over the attacks in Christchurch this morning. – March 16, 2019.
