ALL 111 schools in Pasir Gudang have been ordered closed immediately, following the illegal dumping of chemicals into Sg Kim Kim last week.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, in a statement tonight, said the closure is indefinite.
“All students, teachers and school staff are not to return to their schools until the situation is back to normal.”
He said the decision was made following updates by the Johor Disaster Management Committee.
“We urge all parties to take precautions and keep tabs on the latest developments.”
Earlier today, Maszlee said 34 schools were ordered shut due to the worsening situation.
More than 500 people have fallen ill after breathing in toxic fumes from the dumped chemicals, with nine admitted to the intensive care unit.
The Johor government said it will allocate RM6.4 million to tackle the chemical waste disaster, with the funds to be used for clean-up works at the river and to aid victims.
Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin earlier today said one of three men suspected of being behind the dumping may be charged in court as soon as tomorrow. – March 13, 2019.
