SOCIAL media users continue to scoff at Najib Razak’s lead counsel, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, despite his lengthy explanation today on how he injured himself in a dog-related incident.
Yesterday, a three-judge panel, led by Zabariah Mohd Yusof, agreed to adjourn to Friday the hearing of Najib’s SRC International Sdn Bhd case after Shafee said he fractured a hand after his pet “jumped” on him.
The lawyer went into detail today, saying he fell after his dog playfully jumped on him, and that he did not intend for the hearing to be adjourned.
Facebook users said the court should have requested a medical report as evidence before granting the adjournment.
Tim Fin said Zabariah failed to request a medical certificate to show that Shafee “was indeed telling the truth”, adding that judges who make a “mockery” of the judicial system should be reprimanded.
Edwin Yeo Soon Leong said: “Permission must not be granted. There is no excuse of postponing this hearing due to a minor injury as long as he can talk and hear.”
Grace Khaw was more sympathetic, saying: “Send him for a check-up.”
Shafee keeps at least four dogs – two at home and another two in his office compound.
He said it was at home where a young guard dog jumped on him, causing him to fall.
“I wanted to continue today, this morning. This is important because there has been a lot of (news) reporting that I asked for Friday. No,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, his left hand visibly swollen.
He said the pain from the injury, sustained before he appeared in court on Monday, had worsened.
The court thought it was better to move the case to Friday as Attorney-General Tommy Thomas is not available on Thursday, he said.
Yesterday, Shafee was lampooned by social media users, who accused him of deliberately trying to delay cases involving the former prime minister. Trial for Najib’s corruption cases has yet to start, despite the first batch of charges being brought against him last July.
Najib faces a total of 42 charges related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
His interlocutory appeals involved a bid to remove lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah as fiat prosecutor, a gag order prohibiting the media from discussing the merits of his criminal cases, and seeking the recovery of documents and statements from prosecutors.
His SRC International trial, which was scheduled on February 12, was adjourned after the appellate court allowed his stay application, pending the outcome of his appeals. – March 13, 2019.
