CONTROVERSIAL preacher Dr Zakir Naik met Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa today.

Mujahid, who is the minister in charge of Islamic affairs, posted a photo of the meeting on Facebook this afternoon.

He described Dr Zakir, who has preached all over the world, as “an inspiration”.

“May Allah strengthen his work in guiding people to know Islam.”

Dr Zakir, who is wanted on various charges in his home country of India, has been living in Malaysia. He was granted permanent resident status in 2012 by the former Barisan Nasional government.

New Delhi has long demanded his extradition to have him face the charges, including for inciting communal disharmony. Indian authorities have also revoked his passport in efforts to get him back.

Dr Zakir, who has his own television channel and a large Facebook following, became the subject of investigations in India and Bangladesh after two suspects in a July 2016 terror attack in Dhaka, which left 22 dead, said they were inspired by his “radical preaching”.

His civil group, the Islamic Research Foundation, was also investigated for alleged money laundering.

Dr Zakir has consistently maintained his innocence, denying claims that he promotes terror in the name of Islam.

In a statement last July, he accused the media of using doctored video clips and quotes that were taken out of context, as well as other “dishonest schemes” to make him appear guilty of terrorism-related activities, hate speech and money laundering.

He praised Dr Mahathir Mohamad for allowing him to stay in Malaysia after the prime minister rejected India’s extradition request on the basis that Dr Zakir has done no harm to the country. – March 13, 2019.

  • The government talked about and walked the talk by punishing one person who insulted another religion. Good one. I wish the same rule is applied to others as well. Then it will be excellent!!!

  • Unfortunately his ability to inspire seems to apply to terrorist groups in Bangladesh and in India as well. Surely the newly minted Minister should have been aware of this fact and avoid meeting this man of controversy. Mujahid is no longer an Opposition political and as a minister in His Majesty's government should avoid controversy to preserve the reputation of the PH government.
