INTERNET users have reacted in disbelief that Najib Razak’s lead counsel, Shafee Abdullah, had asked the Court of Appeal to postpone hearings on several appeals relating to the SRC International case because his dog had injured him.
A three-judge panel led by Justice Zabariah Mohd Yusof agreed to adjourn this afternoon’s hearing to Friday morning after Shafee told the court he had fractured his arm after his pet dog “jumped” on him last night.
Commentators criticised both the decision and the reason given.
“Must be a huge dog. And by the way, got M.C. or not?” said radio personality Patrick Teoh on his Facebook page.
“Did he make a police report against the dog?” said Sam Goh in response to Teoh’s post of a news article on today’s proceeding.
“Next would be his pet cat breaking his leg?” asked Thomas Liew.
Kon Wai Luen said: “Now he made all those kids who claimed the dog ate their homework to look really amateurish.”
John Takc questioned how much longer “does the court intend to let this tomfoolery carry on?”
“We all know lawyers use their mouth to talk in court but certainly not hand…” said Facebook user Eric Law.
Steven Tan C.T. said: “This is ridiculously stupid and plain nonsense. Just how long can the PH govt let such nonsense goes wild? Charge the lawyer with contempt of court if this is found to be untrue.”
“Clever… Delay and delay the court case, next thing you know it’s already 5 years and BN has won the election again,” said Kelvin Pereira.
Najib has been charged with 10 counts of money-laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power over sums of RM42 million and RM47 million. SRC is a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
The matter in the appeals court today is one of four interlocutory applications Najib has made in relation to his SRC charges.
Present was Attorney-General Tommy Thomas and Najib. The former prime minister was dressed in a gray suit and did not speak throughout the today’s proceedings.
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas objected to Shafee’s claims, saying: “Everyone wants the trial to start as early as tomorrow.”
The last case involving a major political figure was Anwar Ibrahim’s second sodomy trial.
Anwar claimed trial on August 7, 2008, just two months after his aide, Mohammad Saiful Bukhari Azlan lodged a police report alleging he was sodomised by the former deputy prime minister.
An acquittal by the High Court in 2012 was later reversed to a five-year sentence by the Court of Appeal and affirmed by the Federal Court on February 10, 2015.
The entire legal process took 6 years, 4 months and 3 days. – March 12, 2019.
