UMNO and PAS have formed a technical committee to forge a common front in their quest to unite the Malay Muslim community, said Mohamad Hasan.
The Umno deputy president said the committee will be jointly chaired by vice-presidents from both parties.
He said Umno will be represented by Khaled Nordin and PAS by Idris Ahmad.
Mohamad said the committee will have five members from both sides and will include representatives from civil society groups and prominent individuals.
“This is not to merge the parties. It is to work together and find common ground. We will not be using a new symbol either to contest elections,” he said today after a meeting with the PAS leaders at Umno’s headquarters.
During the two-hour meeting, both sides agreed to continue to work together in future by elections.
The parties also agreed to ramp up cooperation in Parliament and provide better checks and balances to the Pakatan Harapan government.
“We will support the government if it benefits the people, and oppose government policies that do not benefit the people,” said Mohamad.
He said Umno will share its decision today with fellow Barisan Nasional components MCA and MIC, while PAS will do the same with its allies in Gagasan Sejahtera.
Mohamad said the BN lynchpin’s cooperation with PAS is not aimed at sidelining MCA and MIC.
He added that the technical committee will meet in a month’s time.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said both parties’ grassroots support the cooperation, pointing to the Cameron Highlands and Semenyih by-elections, where the PAS-Umno tie-up led to victories for BN.
He said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang supports the move to find common ground with Umno.
“We are here with our president’s mandate. There should not be any issues over his absence here today.”
At the meeting, the Islamist party was represented by Tuan Ibrahim, secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Youth chief Khalil Abdul Hadi and central leadership committee members.
Umno was represented by Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Wanita head Noraini Ahmad and several Supreme Council members. – March 5, 2019.
