ISLAM forbids a Muslim to take the rights of a non-Muslim away, Minister in Charge of Islamic Affairs Mujahid Yusof Rawa said today, weighing in on the struggle of M. Indira Gandhi to locate her youngest child who was taken by her convert ex-husband.
“I have been informed that the police are looking into this seriously. One can’t just use Islam to take away the child without the mother’s consent and then disappear without a trace.
“The child needs her mother and comfort, security, and happiness. I support whatever the police will do to settle this matter as soon as possible,” Mujahid said after a Chinese New Year celebration at SJK (C) Chen Wen in Subang Jaya today.
He was referring to Muhammad Riduan Abdullah, Indira’s ex-husband, who unilaterally converted their three children to Islam without her consent.
Riduan also ran off taking the youngest child, Prasana Diksa, as a baby from Indira in March 2009.
The two older children have been with Indira and are raised as Hindus.
Indira and an action group to support her search for her child announced yesterday that a RM10,000 reward is available for anyone with information leading to the arrest of Riduan.
The former kindergarten teacher’s battle for custody of her three children has been fought in the shariah and civil courts, with both courts issuing competing custody orders for the mother and father.
The Ipoh High Court granted her custody of the children in 2010, and in 2014 ordered Riduan arrested unless he returned Prasana, which he never did.
There is now a mandamus order issued by the court to compel the inspector-general of police to arrest Riduan and find Prasana.
The Federal Court in January last year nullified the conversions to Islam of her three children by their father.
The apex court, in its landmark ruling, also ruled that unilateral conversions by one parent was unlawful. – February 24, 2019.
