THE announcement on highway tolls is not to gain support in the Semenyih by-election, says Gobind Singh Deo.

The DAP deputy chairman said that toll rates was not confined to a specific area, but was a nationwide matter.

“I do not think (it pulls support). It involves other areas (but) wait for the announcement. I think it covers a wider area than the Semenyih by-election,” he told the media after the Pakatan Harapan Ceramah Perdana in Semenyih last night.

He was commenting on the statement by Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

During a programme in Semenyih, Muhyiddin said the government will make an important announcement regarding highway tolls in the near future but did not disclose more details.

Prior to that, Negri Sembilan Bersatu leader Rais Yatim proposed the government to close one toll and reduce oil prices if they want to defend the state seat of Semenyih.

Meanwhile, Gobind said that even though the government was given a mandate for five years, its efforts to resolve the issue of toll collection quickly could help ease the burden of the people.

“My toll issue (has long) been fought for. It is a big issue and affects the people.

“Many times I have mentioned to reduce the toll, if possible (we) get rid of it, but our beginning is difficult. I, as a member of Parliament, have brought many issues forward and had discussions in the cabinet many times. I hope there will be a decision in the near future,” he said. – February 23, 2019.
