SEVENTY-FIVE families at an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp on the outskirts of Sanaa, Yemen, received food aid from Global Peace Mission Malaysia (GPM) today.

The aid, distributed by #PeduliYaman mission chief Azfar Saleh, comprised 50kg of wheat flour, sugar (10kg), Basmati rice (10kg), beans (12 cans) and vegetable oil (4l), enough to last the families about a month.

“We managed to help 75 families out of the 120 at the IDP camp. So, there are some who did not get the aid. We will increase our efforts so that aid can be given to more families,” Syahrir told the Bernama News Channel.

He added that GPM has distributed mattresses and blankets to 50 refugee families in another location near Sanaa.

It is estimated that more than two million people from Hudaidah Saadah, Hajjah and Tamamah regions are seeking refuge in the Yemeni capital.

Several families at the IDP camp expressed gratitude for the aid.

“All of us here thank Malaysia for the assistance,” said Muhammad Mansur Abdullah, from Hudaidah.

“Thank you for helping us,” said Muhammad Saed, who hails from Taiz.

“Malaysia has provided much help to the poor and refugees. We are very grateful,” said Mohammad Matar.

Apart from having to put up with the stench of rubbish from a waste-collection centre nearby, those staying at the camp battle low temperatures daily as their tents are made of thin material.
