COURT of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer has refused to have his statement recorded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s officers over his affidavit on alleged judicial misconduct.

This morning, five MACC officers, including its deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki, met the judge at his chambers to record his statement.

However Hamid refused to have his statement recorded, saying he would only provide his statement to a special task force to convene a royal commission of inquiry.

Hamid was represented by lawyers Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla and Joy Appukuttan in meeting the MACC team.

“He will only speak until a task force and an RCI is formed,” said Haniff when contacted.

“The five MACC officers came about 8.30am and left about an hour later.

“Hamid is firm on his decision that he will only speak when a special task force of formed,” he said.

Last week, Hamid alleged in his affidavit that members of the judiciary conspired to defraud the government.

The affidavit sighted by The Malaysian Insight was in support of lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo’s application to declare that the chief justice failed to defend the integrity and credibility of the judiciary over two alleged incidences of judicial interference.

Hamid claimed certain top judges from the apex court – the Federal Court – have been aiding private parties in defrauding the government.

He also claimed other instances of top judges working in favour of the former government.

Hamid, who is still a sitting judge, in his affidavit repeatedly stressed on the need for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to look into the matter. – February 18, 2019.
