SELANGOR PAS has received no instructions from party leadership to scale down their support for Barisan Nasional and Umno in the Semenyih by-election, said a state leader.

The state’s election coordinator, Roslan Shahir said the cooperation level between PAS and Umno remains as usual.

“No instructions from the top. Our commitment has not changed too.

“I see that the cooperation level between the two parties is as usual,” he told reporters after attending an event in Taman Jenaris in Kajang this evening.

He said this in response to a statement by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan earlier today that the party would only support BN on a smaller scale in the Semenyih by-election compared to what it had given during the Cameron Highlands by-election.

Takiyuddin had said the clarification was made after party president Abdul Hadi Awang explained his meeting with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Friday to PAS leaders at a meeting today.

PAS support for Umno and BN in the Semenyih by-election was thrown into confusion when Dr Mahathir said Hadi had told him, and had given an undertaking in writing, that PAS will not be supporting Umno in the polls.

Roslan also tried to explain his party’s stand by saying that in Cameron Highlands, the party worked harder with Umno to defeat the DAP candidate who stood under the Pakatan Harapan platform.

“As such the commitment level of PAS will be different as in Cameron Highlands the DAP candidate was a non-Malay who fought against a Malay candidate from BN.

“But here in Semenyih, this is a fight between a Malay and another Malay. So we will have to make some adjustments,” he said.

He, however, said PAS will make sure all of the 6,996 voters who chose PAS in the last general election will this time vote for the BN candidate, Zakaria Hanafi.

In fact, he said there could even be an increase of 10% to 20%. – February 17, 2019.
