THE relationship between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS for the Semenyih polls is still good and may be better than what they had during the Cameron Highlands by-election last month, said Hishammuddin Hussein.

The former Umno vice-president said this in response to a statement by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan earlier today that the party will only support BN on a smaller scale in the Semenyih by-election which is due on March 2.

“I do not know (of it) but from what I can see today, the relationship between Umno and PAS here is really good.

“And maybe like what Shahidan Kassim said earlier, it may be better than what happened in Cameron Highlands,” he told reporters during a walkabout with BN’s candidate for the by-election, Zakaria Hanafi, at a night market in Taman Jenaris, Kajang today.

Also present at the walkabout were several Selangor PAS members and Selangor PAS election chief Roslan Shahir.

Takiyuddin said the clarification was made after party president Abdul Hadi Awang explained his meeting with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Friday to PAS leaders at a meeting today.

PAS support for Umno and BN in the Semenyih by-election was thrown into confusion when Dr Mahathir said Hadi had told him, and had given an undertaking in writing, that PAS will not be supporting Umno during the by-election.

Hishammuddin said he is not fully aware of what is happening but what’s important is the sentiment among grassroot members.

“I went to a PAS division area just now and met the division’s vice-chief as well as other PAS members. I can see that the cooperation is still fine.

“So what’s important is what is happening at the grassroot level and not what has been hyped up,” he said.

Earlier today Hishamuddin met with PAS division leaders from Taman Kantan Permai and Desa Sri Jenaris with Zakaria under the latter’s campaign trail. – February 17, 2019.
