DR Mahathir Mohamad repeated today PAS will not support Umno in the Semenyih by-election, following an agreement with PAS chief Abdul Hadi Awang this past week.
The Pakatan Harapan chairman said Hadi had told him two days ago in a meeting that PAS would not back BN, which is contesting the state by-election.
Dr Mahathir, who is prime minister, said Hadi told him PAS had backed BN in the recent Cameron Highlands by-election because the PH candidate was from DAP, the sworn enemy of PAS.
“But because this time around, it is not DAP that is contesting, they said they will not support Umno. But then we saw their (PAS) leaders yesterday (at the nomination centre), so I am forced to come out and divulge the details of our meeting,” Dr Mahathir said today in Puchong Indah, Puchong.
Senior PAS leaders were seen among the BN contingent at the Semenyih by-election nomination centre in Kajang yesterday.
Hadi had said his second meeting with Dr Mahathir since the 14th general election on February 15 was to talk about administrative matters between Putrajaya and the state governments of Kelantan and Terengganu. The meeting was also attended by Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.
The day after the meeting, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad and leaders from its Selangor chapter were at the nomination centre for the Semenyih by-election to support BN candidate Zakaria Hanapi.
Later the same day, Dr Mahathir said PAS had inked an agreement that it will not back Umno. The agreement was supposedly signed at the meeting between him, Hadi, Samsuri and Takiyuddin.
But this was denied by Umno leaders such as information chief Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Selangor PAS leader Iskandar Abdul Samad.
Dr Mahathir did not back down from his claims today and said the agreement was allegedly signed by Takiyuddin.
“PAS said they will not vote for Umno, but they also did not say whether they will vote for PH either. PAS sometimes supports me and sometimes they don’t.”
The prime minister added that in the meeting two days ago, PAS had asked that the federal government change a few rules regarding joint-projects between Putrajaya and the state governments of Kelantan and Terengganu, which are governed by the Islamist party.
He said PAS had requested that officers from the Kelantan and Terengganu government be allowed to sit in meetings with federal government agencies involved projects in the two states.
“We (the federal government) had also asked that state-controlled bodies allow our representatives to sit in their meetings.” – February 17, 2019.
