PAKATAN Harapan Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he came close to being attacked by opposition supporters after nomination for the Semenyih by-election closed this morning.

The youth and sports minister said he was walking towards his car unescorted when he was approached by the group.

“Today, I had no driver with me as I was not on duty as a minister. On my way to the car, I was almost attacked by Barisan Nasional supporters,” he said on Instagram.

“I was cursed at, but I greeted them politely and continued walking. However, they kept pursuing me.

“When I was surrounded, police came to assist. Members of PAS’ Unit Amal who witnessed the incident also came to help after seeing the BN supporters’ physical reaction.”

Syed Saddiq posted a minute-long video, showing people in blue shirts chanting as they made their way towards him.

He said he respects people’s right to have different opinions, “but to the extent of resorting to physical attacks, that’s too much”.

“I am saddened to see that the culture of gangsterism is spreading in our community. I want to be a ‘Yang Berkhidmat’ who serves all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or political ideology. Malaysia unites us all.”

He said he will lodge a report at the Sg Way police station. – Bernama, February 16, 2019.
