THE 47 Malaysians freed from Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey prison are expected to arrive home tomorrow morning, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The detainees were released at 6.30pm Cambodian time yesterday, following several rounds of discussions between Phnom Penh and Putrajaya.

“If there are no obstacles, they are expected to arrive tomorrow at around 10.30am,” Dr Wan Azizah told reporters at a Chinese New Year event in Kuala Lumpur today.

She said the release of the 47 was secured after talks between Julau MP Larry Sng and Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, and Cambodian authorities.

“We want them to come back as soon as possible. That’s why talks went on till 4am.”

On February 7, Wisma Putra confirmed that the Malaysians had been held in Cambodia since December 11 last year on charges related to online gambling.

International Non-Governmental Organisation head Dr Mustapha Ahmad Marican yesterday said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen approved the Malaysians’ release after finding that they had been scammed by a job agency syndicate. – February 16, 2019.
