THE cabinet will decide on the tabling of the proposal to abolish the death penalty before the Dewan Rakyat convenes next month, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said today.

He said the decision will be made after taking into account the views of all stakeholders.

“The final decision will be made before Parliament sits. We have to consider the views expressed by all the stakeholders.

“We have to understand and consider the feelings of the families which have lost their loved ones,” he told reporters after visiting the site of a proposed court complex in Kota Iskandar.

Liew was earlier asked on the government’s plan to abolish the death penalty.

Last November, it was reported that the cabinet decided to abolish the death penalty for 33 offences under eight acts, including Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder).

The decision, which was reached collectively, also encompasses the Firearms (Heavier Penalties) Act 1971, Firearms Act 1960, Kidnapping Act 1961, and Armed Forces Act 1972.

Also in the list are the Water Services Industries Act 2006, Strategic Trade Act 2010, and Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – Bernama, February 14, 2019.
