A FIREMAN today told the Coroner’s Court that he had assumed Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim had been beaten up by an angry mob during the riots at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya, Selangor in November.

Ahmad Shahril Othman made the assumption because the mob attacking the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle he and Adib were in had tried to open the door on the driver’s side, where Shahril was.

“He (Adib) was in the vehicle when the riots started and there were about 50 people that charged towards the van.

“I didn’t notice him anymore as I was more focussed on what was happening on my side of the vehicle as the rioters were trying to open my door.

“It all happened in a span of 50 seconds,” Shahril said.

DPP Hamdan Hamzah had asked Shahril about the police report that his supervisor Badrul Hisham had lodged based on his description of what had transpired during the riots.

Hamdan said according to the report, Adib could not make it back into the van and that he was beaten up by the rioters.

He asked Shahril to explain the report.

Shahril replied he had assumed that if the rioters had wanted to open his side of the van door and hurt him, then they would have wanted to do the same to Adib.

“They could have wanted to hurt Adib. They had already attacked the truck and van,” he said.

Hamdan asked Shahril why did he make that assumption.

Shahril said that if they attacked the truck then there is a possibility that they (rioters) will attack them.

He also said that the last time he saw Adib was before the fire truck had reversed into the EMRS van.

“He (Adib) was still in the van. Then three guys wearing helmets approached the van and tried to open my side of the door.

“I then focused my attention there (at the rioters) and when I turned my van towards the side of the truck I noticed that Adib was gone.”

Shahril said he was left stunned and in a state of shock.

“I then drove to the USJ police station. During the roll call there the team noticed that Adib was missing.

“We then asked the police to help us look for Adib.” – February 12, 2019.

  • He says it took 50 seconds (which is a long time by the way), but yet he has no clue what happened to the guy supposedly sitting next to him throughout that period?

Credibility took a walk. A long walk, far far away.

  • Adib was awake for some time in the hospital. Didn't he say something about what inflicts injuries upon himself?

  • Tak masuk akal. If three men tried to open an unlocked door being held onto by just one hand in the driver's seat, they would have easily done it. The fire-truck reversed (with a panicked driver at the wheel), rammed into the EMRS van behind it causing the van to turn around, and Adib was missing from the front passenger seat of the van! In accidents on highways, impacts between vehicles can cause people in the vehicles to be flung out. Photographs and x-rays of the body during autopsy should be produced to show the type of injuries sustained and how they could have been caused. If a person is severely assaulted, the skin must have marks to show it. But Adib's face in the photograph (with Najib and his entourage in the ICU) looked very good. It was not like the face of someone severely assaulted.
