WHAT are Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun and 16 of his top officers doing in Istanbul, Turkey, for the past week?

Fuzi and his delegation allegedly flew to Istanbul via Doha on Thursday and are expected back later today.

Several senior police officers who are not part of the delegation hit out at Fuzi, saying if he is not interested to work any more, he should just retire and enjoy his pension.

“He (Fuzi) should not be selfish. He knows the government does not have money. He shouldn’t be spending like this,” said the one senior officer who refused to be named.

One of the officers, meanwhile, reportedly posted photographs of the delegation on the trip, to which this senior officer said: “Good. Let them expose themselves. Not very smart.”

Another officer said he heard the delegation was in Istanbul to study Turkey’s methods on combating gambling.

“It doesn’t make sense going to Turkey for this.”

Fuzi’s trip to Istanbul was highlighted whistle-blower site Sarawak Report on Sunday.

It said Fuzi and his men stayed at the four-star Hotel Sura Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet. According to Booking.com, weekend rates at the hotel are roughly RM685 per night, the whistle-blower site reported.

A return business class ticket on those days cost RM6,154 on the way out and RM8,800 return – a total of RM14,954 per officer.

That comes to RM254,218 in total for flights and about RM58,225 for the rooms, before taking meals and expenses into account, the portal reported.

Bukit Aman’s corporate communications chief Asmawati Ahmad told The Malaysian Insight that the IGP was on a working visit to Istanbul.

Asmawati, however, refused to comment on the other officers who accompanied the IGP.

According to Sarawak Report, among those with Fuzi are Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director  Wan Ahmad Najimuddin, Narcotics Department chief Mohamad Salleh and Bukit Aman anti-vice, gambling and secret societies division principal assistant director Rohaimi Md Isa.

In a WhatsApp message to TMI, Rohaimi said he could not comment on the matter.

“The IGP himself will reply. Thank you,” he said, referring to Fuzi.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said last week the ministry will meet Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to decide on the replacements for the IGP and his deputy, who are retiring soon.

Fuzi is slated to retire on his birthday this May while his deputy, Noor Rashid Ibrahim, will retire on March 17, the minister said. – February 12, 2019.

  • We have at least half dozen retired IGPs. Their knowledge of many wrong doings and crime king pins' can be useful in helping the government to fight crime.more effectively. How about a 'council of retired IGPs' reporting directly to the PM'?

  • Muhyddin has given hs blessing for the trip. Now even within PDRM there are already disastisfaction against the IGP performance and if the Home Minister is still practising Umno culture he sure will have a hard time managing the awaken police force within.

  • They are going on a Lawatan Lupa Belajar tour funded by the tax payers. On the other hand, the tax department is busy catching people to pay taxes to fund the government expenditures.
The relevant authorities should investigate the trip organiser and make those who are not eligible to fly business class to pay back.
