NAJIB Razak said he successfully graduated from a British university, in response to claims that he did not.
The former prime minister said he completed his education at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom without a problem.
“No problem, of course (my degree) is legitimate,” he told reporters when leaving the Court of Appeal today.
Past news reports state that Najib graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Economics.
DAP Keranji assemblyman Chong Zhemin had earlier today said that Najib did not complete his studies at UK’s Nottingham University.
A furore has recently erupted over the legitimacy of several politicians’ stated academic qualifications, after Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya landed in hot water for attempting to pass off a degree from an online distance learning programme as being from the prestigious Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
Pakatan Harapan leaders argued that Marzuki was chosen for his credibility, strength and contributions to the coalition.
Most recently, MCA president Wee Ka Siong yesterday questioned how Lim Guan Eng had become a qualified professional accountant in 1983 when he had obtained his Bachelor of Economics from Monash University, Australia in 1984.
Earlier today, Tony Pua brandished Lim’s academic documents as proof of his qualifications, and told a media conference that the minister is considering taking legal action against Wee for questioning his credentials.
Pua provided evidence to show that Lim was a Monash University graduate and had been provisionally accepted as a member of Australian Society of Accountants.
“Since Wee has his head planted so deep in the sand, he might be interested to know that the Australian academic calendar ends in November, before the summer break,” Pua, who is also Lim’s special officer at the Finance Ministry, said today.
“Therefore, by the end of 1983, Lim has completed and passed all his examinations necessary for him to obtain his degree and qualifications to be an accountant.”
Lim became the latest minister from the Pakatan Harapan government to have his academic qualifications scrutinised by the opposition Barisan Nasional.
Other government officials whose academic qualifications have been questioned by the opposition are Mohamad Sabu, Zuraida Kamaruddin and Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian. – February 11, 2019.
