MALAYSIA must ensure that past corrupt practices that have marred its reputation are never repeated again, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Never again,” said the prime minister as he launched Pakatan Harapan’s five-year plan to tackle corruption at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.

“This government was elected because Malaysians could not accept corrupt practices that would destroy the country.

“Malaysians collectively used their power to reject the previous government and this is a stern statement that corrupt practices by government leaders and civil service are unacceptable,” he said at the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP).

In a symbolic gesture, Dr Mahathir presented the plan to several ministers – Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali.

Copies of NACP were also given to PKR president and prime-minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Secretary Dr Ismail Abu Bakar and representatives of civil societies, such as C4’s Cynthia Gabriel.

Also included were Barisan Nasional acting chairman and Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Dr Mahathir said PH has no choice but to make good governance and integrity its priority.

“We won the elections by promising good governance and integrity,” said the 93-year-old as he reminded the country that its ministers and MPs have already declared their assets last year.

“This is to ensure that the people know our net worth before and after we are elected into office,” he added.

NACP signals PH’s commitment to fight corruption, he said.

“This is also a strong statement by the present government that past offenders will face legal action while future offenders will face even stricter action.

“The actions we are taking against offenders are not based on revenge or hatred but the damage it has done to the country is tremendous and nobody can be allowed to conduct corrupt practices again.”

The NACP was prepared by National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC), which is headed by former MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir later said the NACP is to tackle future corruption.

“Previous offenders will be persecuted but more importantly, we must curb and stop future corruption. This plan is a warning to all, including me, not to be involved in corrupt practices.”

NACP outlines six strategies and 115 initiatives with specific timelines to tackle corruption. The report said six out of 10 complaints received by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) involved the public sector. – January 29, 2019.

  • Well we remember you were the one who started the ball rolling on corruptions. Najib and the more than the 40 thieves made it world class. The problem, as you well recognise it, is the luxurious live umno and Malay officials in high places love and cannot give up. Moderation isnt in their vocabulary but resiki for stolen money.

    • Basically if you really read and understand, Tun never condone corruption. Cronyism yes becos he thinks he can help the bumipitras uplift themselves. As history shows, it helped but only the few.

  • Sure or not Tun M? For a start, GLCs should not be headed by politicians or political appointees. Please remind Azmin and the Rural Minister about that.

  • You talk one thing and do another. For almost past nine months after GE14 you twisted everthing in the manifestos and make a mockery of the commitment. Infact your party members if I am not mistaken one of your VPs from the old school are still requesting for patronisation and handouts to ensure their ketuanan. Tell it to Umno and the young Sidiq and they might readily believe your so called "ostentatious" truth. In the streets there is now a wagering that Najib will be scott free from all the crimes. The very fact that the slow dragging feet process to haul up and convicted Najib looks so glaring. The game played by PH is getting bothersome. Any lay man cann see that when Najib become a nuisance and speak out too much in public additional charges will be prettily laid out to him. Why the silly drama . Why pussy footing and dragging. Enough of all the the sandiwara. Laid bare all the charges on Najib for good and save the cost and rakyat time to be bothered. Looks like PH is playing for time to camoufag their incompetency. Buck up PH. Take heed of CH losses. Semenyih is on the next roll. If PH is still being fool hardy and taking the rakyat for granted you asked to be kicked out.

    • Hahahahaha.... You think it's so damn easy to convict???talk is damn bloody cheap.
And to clear up those mess when you don't even know the extent of the hole is so damn easy too yah???
Such a pity we still have people having so simple minds.
As for some party members still up to their old tricks of patronising, we don't even know if these guys are loyal to the cause or someone just out to cause havoc to the cause.
And please don't bring out history.

Bet you too have done things before and regret

    • Nobody ever said that it was easy but for lanun charges it is extremely obvious and nothing to hide with all details locally and from abroad widely incriminating him. Everyone knows about the extent of the damages and how big the hole and it does not need any longer space or time to tell so. Try telling to the rest of the rakyat that they are so simple in mind about Najib charges and they are also so simple in mind voting in PH to clear the mess but instead are disappointed for there are a plenty of blind loyal apologists like you with a long list of excuse to dish out and cover the incompetency. What history are you mumbling about. Ain't that a truth that Bersatu VPs are requesting for hand outs. No need again to provide excuse and judgement of their loyalty for they are vetted and signed in to the Bersatu itself. So who is accountable ??, It is guys like you that makes Malaysia a place of never ending dissapointment possibility. What has my wrongs that I done before and regreted that will impact anyone or the country. I do not offer to be someone great in Malaysia whereby my actions determine the livelihood of the Malaysian. When you make analogy please spare some intellect into what you intend to write. Do not comment if you have nothing constructive to offer rather than sillily just to be in the crowd.
