JPJ issues more than 39,000 arrest warrants against drivers

THE Road Transport Department (JPJ) has blacklisted and issued warrants of arrest to 39,311 drivers for failing to settle their notices of summons on the Automatic Awareness Security System (Awas).

JPJ Director-General Shaharuddin Khalid said up to December 2018, a total of 39,358 cases had been prosecuted, but only 47 cases had been completed while 39,311 cases had been issued with warrants of arrest and blacklisted under Section 17(1)(d), 29(1A) and 119B of the Road Transport Act.

He said that since the JPJ took over completely, 45 operations of the Awas cameras throughout the country were implemented on September 1 2018, a total of 95,850 summons notices were issued up to January 21 and of the amount, only 10,876 summonses had been paid while the rest had yet to be settled.

“The traffic offenders were given 60 days to settle their summonses beginning from the date they were issued, subsequently the JPJ would take stern action by taking the cases to court for prosecution,” he said.

He disclosed this to reporters after officiating the JPJ Expressway Enforcement Office at the Gunung Semanggol (Southbound) Rest and Service Area (RSA) in Bagan Serai today.

The JPJ Station at the Gunung Semanggol RSA was the second to be opened on the expressway managed by PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) after the Dengkil RSA southbound last year.

On another development, Shaharuddin said JPJ is expected to install four more Awas cameras at the Menora Tunnel area after the Chinese New Year. – Bernama, January 25, 2019.
