FORMER Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak today justified his presence on the Cameron Highlands campaign trail, saying he was invited there by the locals.
He said this in response to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim who had last night mocked Najib for appearing in Cameron Highlands as though he hadn’t done anything wrong, alluding to the criminal charges the former prime minister faces in relation to the 1Malaysian Development Bhd scandal.
“I am in Cameron Highlands on the invitation of the locals. The Pahang menteri besar, who is the operations director for the by-election, told me that the people here wanted me to come,” he told reporters this morning, after a walkabout in Sg Koyan Jelai.
This is Najib’s second visit to Cameron Highlands which will go to the polls on Saturday. He will be spending two days in the constituency to campaign for BN candidate Ramli Mohd Nor.
Last week he stayed for four days campaigning mainly in the Orang Asli villages.
Last night Anwar had mocked Najib for daring to show his face in Cameron Highlands despite being involved in a massive corruption scandal.
“Compared to previous by-elections, Najib seems to be more involved in this one. That’s good as it is his right as a citizen.
“But he needs to accept the fact that he has brought the nation’s image into disrepute and damaged the country’s economy… the whole world knows this,” he said during a Pakatan Harapan ceramah in Tanah Rata.
Najib appeared unperturbed by Anwar’s remarks, saying the people of Cameron Highlands are aware of his contributions to the constituency.
“One of the reasons they want me here is because of what I have done for this place as the prime minister. You can say that I have done a lot.
“That is why they want me to come and campaign. And if you look at the contributions of the federal government to Cameron Highlands, (you will see that) the BN administration has done very much (in comparison),” said the Pekan MP.
He was confident BN could retain the seat barring PH’s “dirty” tactics.
“There have been several incidents to show their dirty game. They can’t deny this. There are video clips and such.
“We don’t want this by-election to be determined by dirty campaigns. The people here must be able to vote for the candidate who will represent them well.”
The by-election on January 26 will see a four-cornered fight between BN’s Ramli, PH’s M. Manogaran and two independent candidates.
The by-election was called after the election court annulled the GE14 results after finding evidence of the winning candidate, C Sivarraajh’s involvement in vote buying. – January 24, 2019.
