PAKATAN Harapan wants to prevent Orang Asli voters from casting their ballots on January 26, said Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Nor Adam, adding that this is the latest tactic by the ruling coalition to win the Cameron Highlands by-election.
The plan, Lokman alleged, was uncovered recently by Barisan Nasional “sources” and would see certain “individuals” attempt to buy identity cards from about 2,000 Orang Asli voters in the constituency.
“Without the ICs, these people will not be able to vote. But we have detected this plan and we are going to have standby agents to catch them in the act,” Lokman told reporters at a BN campaign stop in Kg Keledek, Jelai.
Lokman said an Orang Asli Affairs Department official from Pahang had been transferred out within 24 hours after the person had failed to ensure that members of the community turned up at a programme with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
“This showed that PH has broken its promises not to abuse its power in the government to guarantee they can win the by-election,” Lokman said without providing details of when the episode occurred.
Lokman said these tactics were being used as PH’s campaign felt threatened by BN’s Orang Asli candidate Ramli Mohd Noor. Ramli, from the Semai tribe in Cameron Highlands, is taking on PH’s M. Manogaran and two other independents, Sallehuddin Ab Talib and Wong Seng Yee.
The Orang Asli make up close to 22% of voters in the parliamentary constituency. In the 14th general election, BN won Cameron Highlands by 597 votes, but the results were nullified by the election court after evidence of vote-buying among the Orang Asli was uncovered.
Lokman said no police reports have been lodged yet on the above allegations but he will do so once he catches PH in the act.
He added that this tactic was being employed in three to four Orang Asli settlements. – January 19, 2019.
