FORMER Tourism Malaysia chairman Siew Ka Wei was released today after four days in remand to assist in investigations into a RM100 million government contract that was awarded to a private company  just before the 14th general election.

Siew, who owns the news portal Malay Mail Online, and the CEO of a private firm, Elizabeth Ken Tze Ying were released on bail this morning.

The two were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday.

They were each released today on RM50,000 bail.

A source in the MACC when contacted confirmed their release but did not elaborate.

MACC arrested Siew, 62, and Ken, 32, after taking down their statements at its headquarters in Putrajaya on Tuesday.

The two are under investigation for corruption in connection with a RM99.7 million deal that took place on April 4, 2018 when Siew was the Tourism Malaysia chairman.

Siew is group managing director of Nylex (M) Bhd and CEO of Redberry Group, which owns the news portal Malay Mail Online.

Siew, who is reported to be a close associate of former prime minister Najib Razak, was appointed Tourism Malaysia chairman on September 21, 2016.

Last June, former Tourism Malaysia chairman Wee Choo Keong revealed on his blog that a contract valued at RM99.7 million was “evaluated, negotiated and sealed in one day” on April 4 2018. – January 12, 2019.
