Water tariffs expected to rise, says minister

WATER tariff rates may be increased in stages this year, in line with the government’s efforts to restructure the water supply services industry in the country.

Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar said the increase was necessary to protect the consumers’ interest in getting good water quality and ensuring the industry’s services.

“However, I can say that the increase will not burden the people. We will discuss this with all states,” he said as a guest on the Ruang Bicara programme on Bernama News Channel last night.

He said the ministry is working with the National Water Service Commission and discussing with the state governments to get the agreement of all parties before the increase is implemented.

“We have forwarded the business plan to them. Now the state governments are discussing among themselves… there are signs they will agree with the increase in water tariff,” he said.

He added that the exact price of the increased water tariff had not yet been fixed as each state had different rates. – Bernama, January 9, 2019.

  • Why do you have to do this at this time when people are suffering financial? People are having problems putting food on the table and in debts. Can you not put this off for another year.. We have been living with the current water quality for years..so another one or two years delay wont hurt. We are suppose to reduce the cost of living for the people not increase it remember?
