THE Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V today attended Friday prayers at Masjid Al Sultan Ismail Petra in Kubang Kerian.

Sultan Muhammad V was welcomed upon arrival by Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob, Kelantan mufti Mohamad Shukri Mohamad state executive councillors and state government officers.

About 2,000 worshippers attended the prayers led by imam Ustaz Abdul Bari Abdullah, Bernama reported.

After the prayers, the worshippers attended solat hajat prayers for the resumption of duties of Sultan Muhammad V after returning from a leave of absence.

Earlier today amid rumours that the king was abdicating, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he had no knowledge of the ruler’s rumoured intention to abdicate.

Dr Mahathir said he, too, had heard the rumours but said that he had not received any official information on the matter.

“Like you, I have heard rumours.

“I didn’t receive letters or any official indication about anything, so I am not going to talk about it,” he said when asked by reporters about the matter after the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting today.

Rumours of the king’s abdication have been circulating on social media and blogs ahead of a special meeting convened by the Conference of Rulers last night.

Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah yesterday brushed off rumours about the king’s abdication. Sultan Muhammad V is also the Sultan of Kelantan.

“The state government has no knowledge. If it’s a rumour, don’t believe it,” he had said. – January 4, 2019.
