PAS asks for donations to pay Hadi’s London legal fees

PAS is seeking donations to pay the legal fees for party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s defamation suit against Sarawak Report in the UK, said Idris Ahmad.

The vice-president said the party has to raise RM400,000 in two weeks.

“Please help. Need aid to pay our lawyer in the case against Sarawak Report. Need RM400,000. Must raise the money in two weeks to pay the lawyer in UK, “ said Idris in a Facebook post today.

He said PAS has RM69,000 and needed RM331,000.

“There are many more bills to be paid as the case progresses,” he said.

Idris said that to date the Islamist party has spent RM2.5 million in legal expenses pursuing the case in the UK. RM2.1 million was donated by supporters.

Hadi in April 2017 sued Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown for defamation over a report in which she alleged that the PAS president personally received a large sum of cash from then prime minister Najib Razak in exchange for the Islamist party’s cooperation ahead of the 14th general election.

The suit was filed after Rewcastle-Brown declined to meet Hadi’s demand that she pull the article on the site and apologise.

At the party muktamar in Terengganu last year, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the suit was filed by Hadi and not the party.

Hadi is represented by the law firm Carter-Ruck.

The London High Court in May last year ordered Sarawak Report to pay Hadi £28,900 (RM156,100) in costs after it lost all five of its interlocutory applications.

The case is set to go on trial in April. – January 3, 2019.

  • After all the insults thrown at non-Malay non-Muslim, one is hard pressed to donate to the cause of this bigot who clearly did not appreciate Sarawak Report's contribution to the fall of the biggest kleptocrat of our region within living memory. He should have approached Zahid quietly for another cheque.

  • It is a strange logic. Hadi sues Rewcastle Brown (RB) to clear his name. If he wins, he will get compensation. Now, why should anyone else donate for his benefit? After reading all the almost ALL negative comments in the few popular websites, my question, is Hadi or PAS a good/best example of a Muslim? Should political parties in a multi-racial country be identified by religion?
