DEPUTY Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today thanked her teachers for instilling good values in her when she was in school.

She said what they taught her could not be learnt from the textbooks.

“I went to a convent school from Standard One till Form Five. I am indebted to my nun teachers who taught me how to be polite, how to speak well and how to have a lot of patience.

“All this I learnt not from the books. This is how you inculcate good values in a person,” she said in her speech during a Christmas event at Luther Centre in Petaling Jaya today.

Wan Azizah attended St Nicholas Convent School in Alor Setar, Kedah.

She recalled the story of St Nicholas, or Santa Claus, which had reminded her of why it was important to eradicate poverty.

St Nicholas was a rich orphan who helped a poor family, she said.

“But he saved them. When I read that message, (it reminded me of) how poverty must be abolished.

“Charity begins at home, you have to be kind. All these are the things I remember (from school),” she said. – December 25, 2018.
