JOHOR Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today slammed the federal government over the Pulau Kukup issue, telling Putrajaya to stop campaigning and start delivering.
He took particular offence to Water, Land, and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar’s statement earlier today that the acting Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Nazrin Shah, backed Putrajaya’s move to retain Pulau Kukup as a gazetted national park.
In a series of tweets, Tunku Ismail – better known as TMJ, or Tengku Mahkota Johor – asked why Jayakumar involved the acting king in the Pulau Kukup issue.
“First of all, the acting Agong did not say anything. Secondly, why involve the Agong? What are you trying to do? This issue is settled. Thirdly, the prime minister was upset because apparently he was told by a few people around him that the Johor royal family is going to develop the island,” he tweeted.
He then advised the federal government to stop diverting attention and to focus on the nation’s progress.
“Today you are the government. Stop campaigning. The election is over. Now is the time to perform and deliver. Don’t try to divert attention elsewhere, trying to use other issues to deceive. Focus on the progress of the nation.”
Earlier today, Jayakumar said Sultan Nazrin had voiced his support for the federal government’s stance on Pulau Kukup when the prime minister met him on December 12.
“The ministry is responsible for managing natural resources. Pulau Kukup’s change of status can impact the nation’s reputation in managing it as an area of international importance as a Ramsar site,” he had said.
Previously, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the federal government wanted Pulau Kukup’s status to be reinstated as a gazetted national park.
This came after the state government had degazetted the island to make it crown land and gave its ownership to the Johor ruler.
Following public outcry, Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has said that Pulau Kukup will be gazetted as both sultanate land and a national park.
This is the second time Tunku Ismail has taken aim at Putrajaya for intervening in the Pulau Kukup issue.
He had also said that Jayakumar should not meddle with state matters, being an “outsider”. – December 19, 2018.
