FORMER Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik is the “father of all scandals” and should not be allowed to join Pakatan Harapan’s Bersatu, said Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong.
Khoo, from DAP, urged Bersatu not to accept Rahim’s application as it would only be a blow for the party, coalition and state.
“I urge Bersatu to strongly reject any membership application by Rahim Thamby Chik or his followers. Or else, the acceptance of Rahim will damage the integrity of the state government and weaken the people’s confidence in PH in Malacca,” he added.
Khoo also called on the PH leadership council to discuss the party-hopping issue urgently and take a firm stand on rejecting tainted defectors.
“The acceptance of former Umno leaders and members into PH is a betrayal of the people and PH members who struggled against the Barisan Nasional regime for many years.
“Therefore, the PH leadership council must address this issue urgently and sternly.”
He also urged the government to take steps to reform existing laws to stop unethical party-hopping as it was a threat to the democratic process and system in the country.
Khoo also recalled how Rahim was involved in numerous scandals when he was in Umno.
“In 1994, he was involved in a statutory rape case against a student, which was then covered up by the (then) attorney-general.
“Instead, Lim Guan Eng, who was Kota Melaka MP at that time, was imprisoned under the Sedition Act and Printing and Publications Act for standing up and demanding justice for the victim.”
He added that according to a police report lodged by Anwar Ibrahim in 1999, the attorney-general and Anti-Corruption Agency had prima facie evidence that Rahim was involved in misuse of power and corruption, but that, too, was covered up.
“In 2001, Rahim was the culprit who publicly screened the false sex video to victimise Anwar,” Khoo said.
Rahim is the second Malacca chief minister to apply to join Bersatu, following Adib Adam, who made the move in September.
Rahim’s application follows the mass exodus in recent days of Umno parliamentarians and members out of the lynchpin Barisan Nasional party.
Speaking after accepting Rahim’s application, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said Rahim’s past should be put behind him and that the party needed to consider today’s political needs and strategies.
Muhyiddin also said that the PH presidential council had discussed the entry of former Umno leaders into PH parties.
He said the issue had heated up, resulting in conflicting statements from PH leaders after several Umno MPs and assemblymen quit their party last week.
“There have been several discussions on this at the PH leadership level. There are several things to consider before accepting anyone. There has been an agreement on this.” – December 16, 2018.
