Ex-Malacca CM Rahim Thamby Chik to join Bersatu

FORMER Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik will leave Umno to join Bersatu later today, said party sources.

They said he will be handing over his membership application to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin during the party’s state convention in Alor Gajah later this afternoon.

Muhyiddin, who is also the home minister, will be officiating the convention.

“There will be a joint press conference after that,” a source told The Malaysian Insight.

The press conference is expected to be held at 3.30pm.

Rahim is the latest in a series of Umno veterans who have left the party to join Bersatu, a splinter party formed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Other Umno veterans such as Rais Yatim and Syed Hamid Albar are already in Bersatu. Last month, former Wanita Umno chief Rafidah Aziz also expressed her interest to join Bersatu.

At the same time, a number of Umno MPs and state reps have also left the party to become independents. They are widely tipped to join Bersatu at a later date.

Rahim is the second Malacca chief minister to join Bersatu, following Adib Adam who made the same journey last September.

Rahim was the chief minister from 1982 to 1994, during which he was under fire from Lim Guan Eng and DAP over a sex scandal which eventually derailed his political career.

Lim, then an elected representative from Malacca, had accused Rahim of rape involving an underaged girl.

The prosecution against Rahim was withdrawn but the scandal caused him his chief minister and Umno Youth chief posts.

Lim meanwhile was jailed 18 months for publishing details of the scandal.

Rahim also has a chequered past with PKR president and the next prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Originally a part of Anwar’s Wawasan team which kicked out Ghafar Baba as the Umno deputy president in 1993, the duo had a fallout following Anwar’s sacking in 1998.

In 2011, Rahim and two others released a video clip showing a man resembling Anwar engaging in a sexual act.

The trio were charged and fined for their actions. – December 16, 2018.

  • Rahim Thamby Chik is certainly sampah sarap. His rightful place is the rubbish bin. If Bersatu can accept this shady and dodgy character, this will call into question Bersatus principles in accepting good UMNO members - and The entry criteria must be super low.

  • Hello this is the guy who rape an underaged girl. Lim Guan Eng was unjustly put to prison because of that.
    So Bersatu where is your statement about admitting only good people from Umno?
