SIX MPs quit Umno today, informing party secretary-general Annuar Musa of their departure in a letter to its headquarters.

The six are Hamzah Zainudin (Larut), Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu), Shabudin Yahaya (Tasek Gelugor), Mohd Faisah Mohd Fakeh (Sabah Bernam), Latiff Ahmad (Mersing) and Ikmal Hisham (Tanah Merah).

Ikmal’s departure was announced earlier today.

A letter bearing the signatures of all six elected reps dated today was sighted by The Malaysian Insight.

“The six of us, as Umno members of Parliament, declare that we are leaving the party effective today, December 14, 2018,” the letter with the heading “Keluar Parti” (leaving the party) read.

The letter was also copied to the Dewan Rakyat speaker.

Shabudin confirmed that he had signed such a letter and had left Umno as of today.

He said he would not join any other party for now.

“Correct, I have left. As to which party I am joining, I have no comment,” he said.

With the departure of the six MPs today, Umno has lost a total of 17 MPs and is down to 37 seats in Parliament, from the 54 it won in the 14th general election.

This also leaves Barisan Nasional with 40 seats in Parliament, including two held by MIC and one by MCA.

Two MPs who were rumoured to be among the six leaving Umno today but whose names were not in the letter are Jelebu MP Jalaluddin Alias and Jempol MP Salim Sharif. – December 14, 2018.

  • PH should not accept them and the rakyat should vote them out in GE15 as they have shown themselves to be lacking in principles.

  • If they want to join any party, thorough screening; no legal or pending cases, join as ordinary members with no govt appointed positions, probation for 1 year.., show commitment to constituents.... take it or leave it.
This is their chance to change and to be good and sincere politicians..

    • On the contrary I think they should remain independent until GE15. At that point they can join a party and it will be up to the party to decide whether to field them, and ultimately up to the rakyat to decide whether to vote for them. These people are holding the rakyat hostage using their seat, which they were voted into on the understanding that they represented a particular party.
