POLICE will call up three key organisers of last weekend’s anti-ICERD rally for questioning today after minors were spotted attending the protest, said Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

“We will summon three people from the organisers, and we want to know how could this happen. How can children be brought to the rally when they promised that it will not happen,” Fuzi told reporters today.

“So, we want their explanation on this matter. Before the rally, we were told that there will be no violation of the Peaceful Assembly Act,” he said.

The three are expected to be called in at 3pm to the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

The anti-ICERD rally in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday ended peacefully, with no arrests made.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim said police estimate 55,000 protesters turned up for the gathering, which started at 2pm and ended about 5pm as the weather started to turn.

“The rally went on smoothly, with no untoward incidents or arrests,” he said in a statement.

“However, it was tainted by a number of people who brought along their children. This is in violation of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.”

Taking children to rallies is an offence under Section 4 (2)(f) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and could result in offenders having to pay a fine of up to RM20,000 if found guilty. – December 10, 2018.
