For anti-ICERD protesters, equality spells end of Malay rights

DISTRUST and fear were the main drivers for protestors to rally today against an anti-discrimination treaty Malaysia had wanted to sign but had put off after severe backlash from Malay-Muslim groups.

Coming to Kuala Lumpur from across Peninsular Malaysia, protestors against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) said they could not trust Putrajaya’s announcement that it would not sign the treaty in the future.

  • Heres what I received via WhatsApp today: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF STUPID PEOPLE IN LARGE GROUPS. George Carlin.

  • As a media, you should just report instead you are influencing your readers by taking a stand on the issue.
You assume that the ratification of the accord was not done because of pressure from the various pressure groups. Please dont assume unless you have concrete evidence. That way media to avoid taking any stand frequently use the word alleged or allegation in their reporting.
You are not political experts to make a stand. Just stick to new reporting..

  • The initial 25 years of NEP has ample chance for the people to develop and advance. Ask yourselves, where did it go wrong? The answer is clear.

  • 'Someone sponsored a whole bus of us to come here but I dont know who it is. Altogether, 30 buses came from Penang.' Who was the sponsor? Would be good to follow the money trail. I wonder as well if any of the other participants were 'sponsored'...

  • TMI, thanks for the on-the-ground reporting. Just wondering: why were so few women interviewed?

  • Cannot understand why they can trust the previous government who cheated the nation for billions which will certainly affecting their future generations rather than worried about ICERD which is largely misunderstood....instead trusting the government survival, Malay should be stand up and be self reliance and prove the whole world they can compete at the same footing as with other race.

  • The only two questions should have been : "How much were you paid to attend today's rally?" And "Who paid for your transport?"

    • Not the only two, but definitely TMI missed some opportunities here. Given the prevalence of connivance militancy in Malaysia, this is for sure one of the angles they should have pursued, especially as they are one of the few media outlets (if not the only one) who actually turun padang to talk to people whereas many media sit in their comfortable offices and copy-paste press statements from 'leaders', who can twist and turn events to suit their purposes. It's OK. Next time, TMI can do better.
