THERE is no reason for Umno not to take part in the anti-ICERD rally as the rally is actually to celebrate the government’s decision not to ratify the convention, said party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today.
Zahid said Umno stood firm in its decision despite being advised by various quarters for the rally to be called off.
He also said that the rally had nothing to do with the rioting incident at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya.
“The rally is for us to celebrate the government’s decision not to ratify ICERD. As such, there is nothing wrong to celebrate our victory,” he said after meeting BN senators in Kuala Lumpur today.
Earlier today, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim urged Umno and PAS not to proceed with the rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on December 8, especially with the nation now facing racial tension.
He also said the rally has become irrelevant as the government had decided not to ratify the UN convention.
“I urge the leaders of Umno and PAS to use their wisdom on this issue. We can’t deny that there are some racial tensions in the country now.
“The government has agreed not to ratify the convention. So it is odd if they still want to hold the rally. I hope they will not do so,” he said.
Several Malay groups, including Umno and PAS, will be gathering in Dataran Merdeka next Saturday to object to ICERD. – December 2, 2018.
