MCA Youth under its new chief, Nicole Wong, will discuss the possibility of the ethnic Chinese party quitting Barisan Nasional at its annual general assembly today.
Wong said the Chinese community wished for MCA to leave the coalition that had ruled Malaysia for six decades until its first-ever trouncing in the 14th general election in May.
“It is the common view of the Chinese community and the public that MCA can only be reborn and regain Chinese support if it quits BN, or if BN dissolves.
“Isn’t the public’s view clear enough?” she said at the AGM, in Kuala Lumpur, today.
As quitting is on the agenda, Wong reportedly did not invite BN Youth leaders to the AGM as was the customary practice.
In her speech, Wong said MCA Youth would be setting up a social movement bureau to facilitate street protests.
She said it was time for MCA to “transform” from a “rightist” to “centre” party, and this meant being ready to “go to the streets”
“Having been in the administration, we have turned into a party that only knows how to organise activities. We have lost the ability to organise social movement and to set the discourse.”
The social movement bureau will work with “friendly activists”, she said, and join in street marches.
Wong, a 38-year-old mother of three, was last month elected as the first female MCA Youth chairman in the party’s 63-year history.
MCA saw its worst electoral performance in GE14, winning only one parliamentary seat out of the 39 it contested, and two state seats out of 90.
The new leadership under Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong has not committed to taking the party out of BN and has said it was a matter for the AGM to decide. – December 1, 2018.
