Wong Chun Wai to step down as The Star's CEO next year

Wong Chun Wai will step down as The Star Media Group's group managing director and chief executive officer on January 1 next year, and will assume the role of group advisor. – The Malaysian Insight pic, November 30, 2018.

WONG Chun Wai will step down as The Star Media Group’s group managing director and chief executive officer, and will assume the role of group advisor, effective January 1, 2019.

According to an announcement on Bursa Malaysia’s website today, Wong had submitted notice of his retirement.

“He will also relinquish his directorship in all subsidiaries of the company with effect from the same date,” the announcement read.

Wong will continue to serve as group advisor on editorial and corporate relation matters. He will be The Star’s first group advisor.

The announcement on Bursa’s website also said that the company will make an announcement when a suitable successor is appointed.

However, sources told The Malaysian Insight that group’s chief operating officer Roy Tan is set to take over the role of CEO.

Wong was confirmed as The Star’s group managing director/CEO on November 20, 2013, following a board of directors meeting.

Prior to this, he served as group chief editor for more than five years.

He has worked in The Star for more than 30 years, starting out as a reporter in the Penang office. – November 30, 2018.
