THE Education Ministry has said it will gradually phase out white shoes and white socks in schools beginning next year and that by 2021, pupils will have to wear black shoes and black socks.

In a circular signed by Education director-general Amin Senin today, the ministry stated the decision to enforce the change from white to black came after finding that a majority of respondents in its survey, including parents, agreed with having black shoes.

The ministry said in the two-year transition period, schools could issue no regulations nor force pupils to wear black shoes.

It stated enforcement would only commence from 2021.

Education Minister Maszlee Malik first announced in June that the black shoes policy would be implemented next year.

He reportedly said, “many parents have been complaining to me and asking that the rule that students have to wear white shoes be abolished”.

“Alright then, starting from next year, students will wear black shoes and not white anymore,” Maszlee was quoted as saying at a seminar.

His remarks caused a furore and was even raised as an issue in a recent by-election. – November 30, 2018.
