THE protest against ICERD must go on to send a clear signal to the government that it should not treat matters relating to Islam lightly.

PAS representative Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi wants organisers to continue with the rally despite Putrajaya’s decision not to ratify the treaty as announced by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“We have to send a clear signal to the government. Therefore we must continue with the rally as to show them that they must not take issues pertaining Islam and the Malays lightly.

“We have to send a strong message to them to not play with this matter. Do not touch Islam and race,” he said in a speech at Umno-PAS congress on ICERD at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

However, Umno’s Khairy Jamaluddin has previously said that with the cancellation, the protest against ICERD is no longer needed.

“Now is the time to lessen the ‘heat’. It is better to not go through with it,” Khairy said.

However PAS’ number two, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said that the rally will not be a protest but a celebration of victory.

“The rally will go on as scheduled but changes will be made to the format and location.

“The format of the 8 December rally will now consist of prayers and speeches,” he was quoted by the press as saying.

The association of retired policemen and armed forces, Patriot, in a statement however slammed the plan to continue with the rally.

The veterans group painted a dire picture of what could happen if things went out of control at the gathering, pointing to the racial riots of May 13, 1969.

Patriot president Brig-Gen (rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji said since the government had announced that ICERD would not be ratified, there was no reasonable justification for the rally to proceed, even if it was going to be “celebratory” in nature.

“Most that had lived through that dark period (May 13) would not want to be a witness to such catastrophic and horrendous scenes of destruction with burnt bodies strewn across the streets of Kuala Lumpur ever again,” Arshad said in a statement.

“We members of Patriot that had served the armed forces and police during those trying periods were witnesses to such horrendous scenes.

“And it is for this very reason we urge the organisers of the December 8 anti-ICERD rally that is primarily a Malay-based rally, not to proceed with the event.” – November 25, 2018.
